AVAILABILITY:  Six copies of this book form index were produced. A copy is available for public use at the Illinois Historical Library (Springfield IL).
SCOPE OF INDEX:  All deaths and obituaries are indexed, except those of national and international figures. All items of genealogical interest (marriages, births, visits from out-of-town relatives, ...) up through 1888 are indexed. From 1886 to the end of 1889, all vital records, including births, are indexed. From 1890-1892, all marriages, deaths and obituaries were indexed along with some out-of-town visitors (especially if they were "old settlers" or if a clear family relationship was stated, particularly visits of parents, brothers and sisters).
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A book form index typewritten on 8½x11 inch pages. The book is in two sections: (1) A chronological listing of articles which appeared in each newspaper indexed (within the scope of selection) and (2) a surname index to the chronology. CHRONOLOGICAL LISTING: The day and date of each paper is listed first. Following this are two columns. The right hand column contains a lengthy abstract summarizing the contents of the article. It includes names, dates, the contents of the article. It includes names, dates, places, ages, ...etc. The left hand column lists the surnames which appear in the abstract. SURNAME INDEX: An alphabetical list of those surnames shown in the left hand column of the chronological listing, along with the page number in the chronology where that surname appears. The chronology occupies 180 pages and the surname index occupies 24 pages.
