AVAILABILITY:  The card file index is available for use in the Richland County Public Library. The index is also available on microfilm. The cards for Nov 1973 through Dec 1975 have been microfilmed in a single alphabetical sequence and may be purchased for $300. Annual indexes covering 1976-Current will be made available on microfilm for $135 per year. Order direct from the Richland County Public Library.
SCOPE OF INDEX:  The index includes South Carolina news events of all types, but does not include all obituaries and birth notices.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  The indexes to the COLUMBIA RECORD and THE STATE are 3x5 card file indexes. From Nov 1973 through Dec 1975, they have been interfiled and alphabetically arranged, first by subject and within each subject alphabetically by headline. Each year thereafter the two newspaper indexes have been interfiled alphabetically by subject and within each subject are in chronological order. As the index for one year is completed, it is microfilmed. Each index card contains a subject heading or personal name, the headline, an annotation if the headline is not sufficient, and the title, month, day, year, page and section of the newspaper where the article will be found.
