AVAILABILITY:  A published index. Copies are available for $10 each. The index is available for public use in the Public Library of Fort Wayne-Allen County (900 Webster St, Fort Wayne IN 46802).
SCOPE OF INDEX:  Covers state and local news only. Includes local business news as well as news about social service organizations, professional societies, neighborhood associations and other local groups. Obituaries are indexed in a separate section. Except for items of unusual significance, sports, traffic accidents, minor crime, and court proceedings are omitted. Book and film reviews, recipes, the 'action line', and social club announcements are also omitted. Letters to the editor are indexed only when they present the view of an organization or of a public official.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A book form index which has been phototypeset and printed on 8½x11 inch pages. The 1978 index totals 160 pages and is divided into four sections: SUBJECTS, NAMES, OBITUARIES, and a DIRECTORY OF PUBLIC OFFICIALS. Entries in the SUBJECT and NAMES sections begin with the citation. The citation includes the month, day, page, and section. Following the citation is the headline or other descriptive information about the article, including accompanying photos, maps, illustrations, and charts. Also noted are editorials, letters to the editor, and essays. Entries in the OBITUARY section consist of the name, followed by the citation for the article (month, day, page and section) and then the month and day of death.
SIZE OF INDEX:  The 1978 annual contained about 36,865 entries in the subject and personal name sections and about 2,800 entries in the obituary section.
