SCOPE OF INDEX:  "This new publication is a vital research tool for the serious genealogist who has lines into this northern Illinois county. From the first issue of the WHITESIDE SENTINEL, published July 23, 1857, through the year 1881, I have extracted all the deaths and condensed the obituaries into brief items that contain the pertinent information desired by genealogists. Names, birth and death dates, names of next of kin; places of birth and death and where the people moved during their migrations across the country are included. The names of 2000 people who died in Whiteside or neighboring counties, as well as isolated deaths from other parts of the USA, are in this book. Also included is an 1877 map of Whiteside County; 1819 and 1835 maps of Illinois showing county divisions and a brief history of Whiteside County. The WHITESIDE SENTINEL, published at Morrison, Ill., is the principal paper that was used, but the STERLING GAZETTE, published at Sterling, Illinois, was consulted many times, and to a lesser degree, some other northern Illinois papers. The WHITESIDE SENTINEL and the STERLING GAZETTE were - and are - fluorishing weekly papers. The SENTINEL is located in the county seat of Whiteside; Morrison."
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A book form index typewritten on 8½x11 inch pages. Entries are arranged in alphabetical order by last name. Entries consist of all appropriate information as described in the Scope note (see above), plus the citation. The citation consists of a code for the newspaper, the month, day, and year.
