SCOPE OF INDEX:  An extensive index that was originally compiled by the Minneapolis Journal library. All the news covered by the newspaper, including national and international news, was indexed.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A ledger (book) format. From May 1891 to 1900 the ledgers are handwritten. For this period the entries are arranged in alphabetical order according to the FIRST LETTER of the first word in each entry, and then in CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER. The indexers appeared to have been careful to make the first word of each entry a keyword emphasizing the subject of the article. However, to find all articles dealing with a single topic, it will be necessary to read through all of the entries beginning with the same letter. For the period 1901-1928, the entries have been typed, and they have been arranged in alphabetical order according to broad subjects. Within each subject, the entries are in chronological order. Entries consist of the headline or a brief description of the article, plus the citation. In the early indexes (1891-1900) the citation consists of the month and day. in the later indexes, the citation consists of the month, day, page, and column.
SIZE OF INDEX:  There are 47 volumes in the set.
