SCOPE OF INDEX:  The index includes marriages, obituaries, and selective items such as land sales, military promotions, poisonous snakes killed, and rewards for runaway slaves. News from New Hanover County and surrounding counties is included.
FORMAT OF INDEX:  A book form index, typewritten and printed on 8½x11 inch pages. The index is divided into two sections: ABSTRACTS and INDEX TO ABSTRACTS. Brief abstracts of the selected newspaper articles have been arranged in chronological order in the ABSTRACTS section. These abstracts include the date of the newspaper, but not the page or column. The INDEX TO ABSTRACTS section is an alphabetical list of personal names, places, organizations, etc. along with the page number in the ABSTRACTS section where this name appeared.
